PSA Grading ROI: Which Sports and Categories Actually Deliver?
By KOLT, Senior Analyst, KLLKT.in
Grading ROI Framework
ROI is calculated as the PSA 10 (or PSA 9 when 10 unavailable) price divided by raw price. This multiplier shows value created per dollar of raw card cost. We ignore submission fees ($20–$50) for relative comparison because they are fixed while upside varies dramatically by card. A 5× card covers fees easily; a 1.5× card does not.
Baseball Analysis
Baseball shows the widest variance. Vintage cards produce extreme multipliers. The 1969 Hank Aaron Topps moves from $30.41 raw to $5,547.36 in PSA 9 — a 182.4× return. Modern base rookies also perform well:
| Card | Raw | PSA 10 | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shohei Ohtani 2025 Archives | $2.41 | $174.01 | 72.2× |
| Shohei Ohtani 2026 Topps | $2.02 | $88.78 | 44.0× |
| Justin Verlander 2023 Topps | $5.55 | $114.73 | 20.7× |
| Nick Kurtz 2025 Bowman’s Best | $3.26 | $54.32 | 16.7× |
Vintage condition rarity plus modern low-print rookies both drive baseball ROI.
Basketball Analysis
Basketball delivers consistent but lower multipliers than baseball. LeBron James 2025 Topps Chrome rises from $23.46 to $377 (16.1×). Paige Bueckers 2025 Instant moves from $2.74 to $37.95 (13.9×). The category benefits from star power yet lacks the 40×+ outliers seen in baseball.
Football Analysis
Football contains two distinct groups. Mid-tier veterans show modest gains (Maxx Crosby 1.7×). High-upside rookies in Prizm product explode:
| Card | Raw | PSA 10 | Multiplier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caleb Williams 2025 Prizm | $7.93 | $227.25 | 28.7× |
| Jalen Milroe 2025 Prizm | $2.75 | $58.67 | 21.3× |
| Jalen Milroe 2025 Optic | $117.99 | $304.53 | 2.6× |
Low-raw-price Prizm rookies produce the strongest modern football returns.
Pokemon Analysis
The single Pokemon example (Rayquaza Silver Tempest) moves from $25.20 raw to $149.76 PSA 10 — only 5.9×. Without more data the category appears to offer the lowest relative upside of the four sports.
Which Sport Wins?
Baseball wins overall. It combines the highest single multiplier (182.4× on the Hank Aaron) with multiple modern 40×+ opportunities. Football places second for modern collectors, regularly delivering 20–28× on low-cost Prizm rookies. Basketball is reliable but rarely spectacular. Pokemon trails.
Your Grading Strategy
1. Prioritize sub-$5 raw baseball rookies and prospects in flagship sets — target 20×+ upside.
2. Add select low-print Prizm football rookies under $10 raw for 20×+ shots.
3. Avoid mid-tier veteran cards across all sports; multipliers rarely exceed 3×.
4. Reserve vintage submissions (pre-1980) for high-grade candidates only; the Hank Aaron example proves the ceiling.
5. Track population reports quarterly — cards with <10 PSA 10s maintain the largest spreads.
Focus 70 % of submissions on baseball, 20 % on football Prizm, and 10 % on opportunistic vintage. This allocation maximizes expected ROI while controlling submission costs.
